Digital Marketing Explained

Since digital marketing is vast, I will teach you skills that have the potential to completely change your life, it’s only fair that we take a step back and ask the question, okay, but what exactly is digital marketing?

Digital marketing is the use of websites, apps, mobile devices, social media, search engines, and other digital means to promote and sell products and services.

Well, in its most simple form, digital marketing is when you’re promoting yours or someone else’s business and its products online.

But what’s defined as a business can be pretty broad. An influencer, for example, is their own business. So whenever they are promoting themselves online, they are doing digital marketing.

And what’s defined as a product is pretty broad to now.

It can be a physical product like a hair gel or a service, like getting a haircut or a digital product like an e-book.

You are doing digital marketing as long as you promote any of it online. But while the definition of digital marketing is straightforward, performing it isn’t. Although reaching people online has never been easier than it is today, with the average person spending 6.5 hours on the internet daily.

Digital Marketing problems

New problems have appeared for digital marketers, such as banner blindness, where the user will be so accustomed to ignoring promotions on websites that they don’t even notice them. And other problems have appeared to like promotion fatigue, where people feel that businesses are constantly invading their space and wasting their time with the business’s promotion, that they either completely ignore them or even start disliking the business.

As you might know from your own experience, getting those advertisements pop up before your YouTube video starts playing. It isn’t any fun, is it?

And reading someone’s Instagram post, only to realize that it’s just one big promotion for a product that’s a huge turn off.

And this is where the problems with digital marketing really start to show themselves.

This is where the art and science of effective digital marketing comes in.

Now the key to successful digital marketing is showing the right product in front of the right audience. That’s how you get results. And while this will require many steps to accomplish, the very first step is understanding who the right audience is, where to find them, and how to talk to them.

Marketing Strategy Explained

So why do 99% of digital marketing efforts fail to get real results?

Because most people think that learning one skill is enough, or they learn multiple skills without understanding how to tie them together into an effective strategy.

  • First, they might learn how to build a website, but a website alone isn’t enough. You need to do your market research first to understand who your audience is and how you’re going to talk to them. Only then can you start building a website that your visitors will love.
  • Then you actually need to get visitors by having your website appear in the search results. This is called search engine optimization, or SEO, but most people aren’t going to trust you enough to buy from you. So this is not a complete marketing strategy either.
  • You need an email list to reach your visitors again and again to build a relationship with them. This is called email marketing, and a good strategy leaves nothing to chance without getting data from every step of your marketing.
  • How will you know what’s working well and what isn’t? Using Google Analytics and learning how to read that data? We can guarantee real results over time.

This is why every learning path starts with building a marketing strategy, and why none of those skills will bring you results on their own.

They need to be tied into a strategy, and that alone will put you in the top 1% of marketers.
