What is Content Marketing? My Personal Journey from Selling Snacks to Building a Digital Brand
Have you ever wondered, What is Content Marketing?
Many people think content marketing is simply posting videos on TikTok or uploading pictures on Facebook. Others believe it’s only for influencers or big companies with huge marketing budgets.
I used to think the same way.
Looking back at my life, I realized I had been practicing content marketing long before I even knew the term. From secondary school to university, from selling makeup to becoming a real estate marketer and eventually building my digital marketing career, content has always been the reason people trusted me enough to buy.
If you’re asking What is Content Marketing?, let me share my experience.

What is Content Marketing?
Content marketing is the process of creating and sharing valuable, useful, and engaging content that attracts people, builds trust, and encourages them to become customers.
The content could be:
- Videos
- Pictures
- Articles
- Social media posts
- Emails
- Infographics
- Podcasts
- Live streams
- Case studies
- Customer testimonials
In simple terms, content is anything valuable you can give away before asking people to buy from you.
Instead of chasing customers every day, your content works for you by attracting the right audience.
That is exactly what happened throughout my life.
My First Experience with Content Marketing (Without Knowing It)
Back in secondary school, I was in a boarding school. Whenever I returned from home, I usually bought provisions like Nutri-C, peanuts, biscuits, and other snacks. One thing I noticed was that I always arranged them neatly. People loved how attractive everything looked.
Before I even finished unpacking my box, classmates would already be asking,
“Can I buy one?”
At that time, I wasn’t thinking about marketing. I simply presented what I had in an appealing way.
Looking back today, I realized I was already using one of the basic principles of content marketing. Presentation sells.
People first consume with their eyes before making a buying decision.
How Makeup Taught Me What Content Marketing Is
Fast forward to university. A friend and I started selling makeup products. Instead of convincing people with long speeches, we decided to become the advertisement ourselves. She applied the makeup on herself. She also made me up. Everywhere we went, people admired how beautiful our faces looked. Some would ask, “What foundation are you wearing?” “Where did you get your lipstick?” “Can I buy this?”
Many people bought our products simply because they could see real results.
We didn’t just tell them the makeup was good. We showed them.
That is another powerful example of what content marketing is.
Sometimes, your best content is simply showing people your results.
Real Estate Changed My Understanding
Years later, I joined the real estate industry. Like many beginners, I wanted people to know I sold properties.
So I started posting affordable property flyers on my WhatsApp Status almost every day.
At first, only a few people viewed them. Then something interesting happened. People started replying.
Some asked about prices. Others requested locations. Some simply wanted more information. That was when I realized something. Consistent content keeps your business in people’s minds.
Eventually, I began hosting live streams where I talked about different property investments.
I explained locations, discussed documentation, answered people’s questions.
Many of the people who eventually bought properties from me had never met me physically.
They trusted me because they had watched my videos, listened to me speak, and consistently seen my content online.
Content built the relationship before we ever had a conversation.
Building My Personal Brand
As my confidence grew, I expanded my online presence.
I created accounts on:
- TikTok
- WhatsApp Business
- Email marketing platforms
I designed my logo, created my own identity.
I became Kendris Realty.
Instead of depending only on company marketing materials, I started producing my own content.
I visited properties, attended inspections, recorded videos, created voiceovers, wrote captions, edited videos using CapCut, designed infographics with Canva.
I created property flyers, Sometimes I designed my own flyers, Sometimes I shared my company’s promotional materials.
I also studied successful real estate marketers.
I observed how they presented properties.
I learned from their storytelling techniques.
I adapted ideas that matched my own personality and style.
Content marketing isn’t about copying people.
It’s about learning what works and communicating it in your own authentic voice.
I Invested in Creating Better Content
The more I created content, the more I realized quality matters.
So I invested in simple tools that improved my work.
I bought:
- A tripod
- A content light
- A microphone
These tools helped me produce clearer videos and better audio.
For editing, I use CapCut, For graphics and infographics, I use Canva.
None of these tools made me successful overnight. What truly mattered was consistently creating valuable content.
The equipment simply helped me present it better.
Why Content Marketing Works
One lesson I’ve learned is this:
People rarely buy from strangers.
They buy from people they trust.
Content helps you earn that trust.
Every video you publish…
Every article you write…
Every helpful social media post…
Every email you send…
Every live stream you host…
All of these become opportunities for someone to know you, like you, and eventually trust you.
It builds relationships before sales happen.
Benefits of Content Marketing
From my personal experience, content marketing can help you:
- Build trust with your audience.
- Increase brand awareness.
- Generate quality leads.
- Educate potential customers.
- Grow your social media presence.
- Improve your Google search rankings.
- Get discovered through AI-powered search.
- Position yourself as an expert in your industry.
- Create long-term relationships with customers.
- Increase sales without always relying on paid advertising.
I’ve experienced many of these benefits firsthand, especially in real estate and digital marketing.
